Suse 10.0 Realplayer 10.0 Obsolete Codec
Hi all,
I installed Suse 10 recently and had trouble listening to an online radio station.
Realplayer (already installed with Suse) said "this is an obsolete codec, please contact web site admin about updating"
So I googled the error, and found a GREAT site which gave me step by step instructions on how to get around that error by installing some old realplayer codecs and doing some command line stuff....I'm pretty sure one of the lines started with the command " ln "
Then, I had to reformat the HDD to use it for backup of my other box.
Now, I've re-installed Suse 10. AND I CAN'T FIND THE WEB SITE ANY MORE!!!!!!
Can anybody help????
Many thanks
Al

I know you can't post working links, but could you provide a web page or the like for the radio station? It also helps to list a distribution in you profile.
Was the advice something like this ? http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=415237

scroll down and hit any of the realplayer buttons.
Username = yesterday
Password = yesterday
It's all in Chinese (my wife is from Hong Kong)
the site looked similar to that, but it had a yellow background and was specific for the "obsolete codec" error.
Thanks

Plays no problem here. I'm using Realplayer 10.0.6.776 (gold) downloaded from real.com.
The only modification is the one I already mentioned. Not sure if this mod makes the difference or if you have a plugin problem.
edit/ Possible relevant fact, I run mozilla, not mozilla-firefox.

is it perhaps the "gold" part which makes a difference?
I've already done the mod as per your instructions.
plugin part seems to work fine, it opens realplayer.. it's a realplayer error message

Okay. The information I gave you before was for Slackware. I just booted into Suse 9.2 to test this modification. The fix is definitely needed to play that media. I'm running Firefox 1.0.7 and the same version of Realplayer mentioned before. Not sure where it's going wrong for you but it may not be the version of realplayer your using.
Go to the Realplayer codecs directory (/usr/lib/Realplayer/codecs in my case) and list the files with 'ls -al'. Check that the new entries look like this
rwxr-xr-x ddnet.so.6.0
rwxr-xr-x dnet.so.6.0
lrwxrwxrwx dnet.so -> dnet.so.6.0
If they don't run 'chmod 755' on ddnet.so.6.0 and dnet.so.6.0
Not sure if these permissions are optimal, but they work for me.
Hope this works. Good luck

Somehow we are misunderstanding each other. No problem, let's start again.
Do you have ddnet.so.6.0 and dnet.so.6.0 ? The likely place to look is /usr/lib/codecs/ or /usr/lib/win32/. If you don't have these codecs get them from packman or mplayer. They are part of the win32 codecs package.
Now if you have these codecs do this in a terminal (Konsole if you are using kde);
su
<enter your password>
cp /usr/lib/codecs/dnet.so.6.0 /usr/local/RealPlayer/codecs
cp /usr/lib/codecs/ddnet.so.6.0 /usr/local/RealPlayer/codecs
cd /usr/local/RealPlayer/codecs
ln -s dnet.so.6.0 dnet.so
exit
exit
If the dnet codecs are somewhere other than /usr/lib/codecs change the above lines accordingly. The "l" in ln -s is lower case 'ell' not 'one'.
Test this setup. If it doesn't work you may need to use the chmod I mentioned earlier, not sure on that part.
Any further trouble please post back.

The instructions should have in no way damaged RealPlayer. I just followed them verbatim in a 3rd distro (Mepis) with no unexpected consequences. If you check back on the thread I referenced earlier you will find they worked for another user on Suse 10.
Look in /usr/local/RealPlayer/codecs with 'ls -al'. There should be new entries in there;
dnet.so.6.0
ddnet.so.6.0
dnet.so -> dnet.so.6.0
The instructions should have caused this.Nothing more,nothing less. The changes can be reversed by removing these files.
Open a terminal and try these commands;
realplay
/usr/local/RealPlayer/realplay
/usr/local/bin/realplay
One or all of these commands should start RealPlayer. If not you have unintentionally moved something.
To anyone reading this thread:
Any guesses what went wrong? I'm still a puppy in linux and may be overlooking something obvious.
edit/ also what does the command 'which realplay' return?

hmmm.. RealPlayer seems to have disappeared from your path. If something I suggested caused this I apologize. I haven't seen Suse 10 upclose but I would have expected it to look more like this http://www.novell.com/products/linux...ealplayer.html which is more like 9.2.
with RealPlayer in /usr/lib/.
Try this;
su
<enter password>
cd /usr/bin
ln -s ../local/RealPlayer/realplay realplay
exit
realplay
You should see RealPlayer start. Truly hope this solves it.

al@linux:~> su
Password:
linux:/home/al # cd /usr/bin
linux:/usr/bin # ln -s ../local/RealPlayer/realplay realplay
linux:/usr/bin # exit
exit
al@linux:~> realplay
Cannot find the HelixPlayer directory.
Please set the path in the hxplay script.
I think we're getting somewhere? at least it's starting to spit out error messages.....
Many many thanks for your help and patience

Honestly I'm baffled. You could try deleting the link just created in /usr/bin/ with 'rm' (as root user) and trying either of the 2 methods suggested here;
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=416563
Our RealPlayer installations seem to be very different, making it difficult to play along at my end.
One piece of advice from someone who has been on these forums a little longer. If the question seems Suse specific (and many multimedia questions are) the best place to ask is the Suse forum in the link above. This thread is now over 150 views and no one else has responded. I doubt this would have happened in the Suse sub-forum. Just a hint for next time.
