I just got Mandrake 9.2 DL Edition installed on my Sony Vaio PCG-FRV35 laptop yesterday, and after fnally getting everything working at an acceptable level(including iworking softmodem), I thought it would be nice to install this nice app and customize the kde environment. Anyhow, I have downloaded the latest rpm for Superkaramba, and installed python-devel4.2-22.1.92mdk.rpm, but superkaramba doesnt seem to install.
It states, "Some package requested cannot be installed:
superkaramba-0.32-1mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied libpython2.2.so.0.0)
do you agree ? " ---- I thought that python-devel satisfied that dependency?! Please explain to me what I am doing wrong.
There's a big long list of packages on this page -- superkaramba is at the bottom somewhere. I use Mandrake 10.0, and it installed without issue. Since MDK9.2 uses KDE 3.1.3 (or is it 3.1.4? I can't remember), there may be issues. Let me know if it throws up any more errors.
Either way, it's probably a better idea to use SuperKaramba 0.33, as SuperKaramba 0.32 doesn't display a lot of Karamba themese properly -- if found majority of the themes on kde-look.org displayed text wrong under 0.32. The 0.33 package fixed this right up.
Well I tried to install 0.33 but ran into another dependency issue with xmmscntrl.... I even went as far as to dl xmmscntl, and still have the same problem. I've run into several similiar problems in the last two days, but have managed to figure them out. With this one I'm stumped. Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Darn. I hate when you follow a dependency trail to a dead end
Ok, lets do this: Try installing the SuperKaramba 0.33 RPM with the the "nodeps" option so that it'll ignore missing dependancies and install itself. After the installation, the app may not run without the required dependancy. I suspect "xmmscntrl" is only needed XMMS playback functions, so it may not effect how SuperKaramba runs. (Of course, it'll probably cause problems if you're running a SuperKaramba theme that uses XMMS playback.)
Easiest way to install with the "nodeps" option is to open a console, move yourself into the directory you have the superkaramba RPM and su to root. Then type:
Code:
rpm -i --nodeps superkaramba-0.33-2mdk.i686.rpm
See how that works.
Plan B: If that's no good, compile from source. You can get it here:
I've compiled SK 0.33 from source before on Mandrake 9.2, and from memory it wasn't that difficult. It may spit out a missing dep, but only one or two.
Tell me if you have any problems compiling from source, of if you need instructions on how to do it.
I know it seems like a lot of work, but I've had SK 0.33 running on MDK 9.2 before, so I know it can happen!
if you get any errors about not being able to get the hdlist -
edit your 'update source' thru gui and try another mirror.
make sure you have ftp forwarded thru any routers.
Thanks alot man! Finally got it to work with you're suggestion. It doesnt seem to include functionality with xmmscntr, but I'm satisfied.
Also thanks for the suggestions regarding urpmi. Sounds very useful in tracking down dependencies. I will have to remember that one.
I think my transition to Linux is going to be pretty smooth. I'm an MCSE. and plan on sticking with Windows at work, but definately going to stick with my Linux box at home!
If you're interested in setting up urpmi so that you can automatically have dependency issues resolved, I suggest you check out the Easy Urmpi website:
It's a very useful little tool. Just make sure you confirm that the repository you're adding is maintained before you add it. It's also a good idea to get comfortable with urmpi before you add to much -- there's nothing more frustrating than messing something up and not being able to install RPMS from the MDK CDs
