Suitable sound plugin for mupen64plus (N64 emulator)

I wanted to play Conker's Bad Fur Day for the N64 on my
Linux machine (I own the original game, and made the ROM
myself. Nothing illegal, I just want to keep playing it).
I decided to use the mupen64plus emulator, and got the graphics
running pretty well by tinkering with different settings.

However, the sound is unbearably choppy, and I would like
to change the audio plugin used by mupen64plus (being a
plugin based app) from the supplied "JttL's SDL Audio 1.5-development"
into something better. I'm sure this is possible; I just need
a plugin.

Any help is much appreciated.
