Suggestions for grabbing pics from usb webcams?

I recently got handed a few boxes of webcams (no, not off the back of a lorry) and I've just gotten around to setting my kernel up with the necessary stuff and started messing about with them. Everything is recognised and working OK, so no problems there.

What I would like is some suggestions for some applications I can use to grab images from them. I'd like a command line app that I can easily run from a shell script to arbitrarily grab a pic every now and again, and another app with a pretty GUI interface that I can set up for non-techie's to use to play with them.

Can anyone recommend some favourite apps for these purposes? Any arguments for what makes them better than the alternatives etc?

Many thanks in advance,

David
