suggestions for chat program?

i'm looking for a new IM client for Mandy 10.0... kopete sucks. the Windows version of GAIM that i tried is enough to make me try it again in a few years when they get something right (pick something guys, just get one thing right already!) i liked the IM client that was packaged with Linspire but i can't remember what it was :(

anyone got any suggestions? if so please post links :D

BluePyre 07-14-2004 12:25 PM

You might mean AMSN. What don't you like about Kopete?

XavierP 07-14-2004 12:27 PM

Gaim is fine for me - maybe if you explain excatly what is wrong with the ones you tried you won't just get a list of unsuitable clients.

Ive been running gaim on linux for years and never had any problems. The windows version used to crash a lot for me but havent had any problems with it in the past few years.

I normally run a console aim client called naim since I can run it on screen and detach when not in use and reatach remotely.

i've never liked the things that Gaim leaves out without telling you- direct connect, file transfer, webcam on the protocols that work that way, the away message bug, etc. i will admit it's better on linux but up till recently i only had experience with the windows version. sorta psychological i guess.

Kopete is nice and small and such, but i can't stand the way i have to click 'send' rather than press enter. it's an inconsistent movement and reminds me too much of why i stopped using a mac.

thanks for the suggestions, i've dl'd a few programs from sourceforge and will try out your suggestions first

 Ummmmmmm........ in the chat window:
Settings > Configure Shortcuts

Change Send message from alt+enter to enter.

tried it, didn't seem to work consistently. it would do it every once in a while, but not often enough to say it was fixed. very strange

BluePyre 07-14-2004 01:50 PM

I've never had that kind of problem, nor heard of it. Seems strange. Have you got the latest version?

Cheechi 07-14-2004 01:52 PM

i got what came installed on MDK 10 official

BluePyre 07-14-2004 02:45 PM

Is that the latest version? Try a urpmi gaim (on the assumption you have it set up to use online mirrors) and see if there's anything newer.

AnimaSola 07-14-2004 02:55 PM

gaim works pretty good for me. the linux version that is. the windows version does suck. im having a lot of problems with yahoo tho. but thats not their fault. my biggest complaint with gaim is that the pannel button (is that how to explain it?) doesnt blink when someone IM's me. and while kopete doesnt have this particular issue it does seem to have some problems with sending with a press of "enter" even if its configured to do so

webazoid 07-14-2004 03:24 PM

i'm using.....gasp!!!......gaim .59.9.... i just need a basic aim program. prob w/ gaim .79 is that it uses gtk2...and the fonts for gtk2 apps are so darn jagged compared to the gtk1 apps. i just hate the look of anti-aliased fonts. does anyone else encounter jagged gaim .75+ fonts? i'm using mdk10.

AnimaSola 07-14-2004 03:39 PM

no, my fonts look really good and im using .78 i think. altho im having trouble installing gtk2.4.4 for some reason (see my post down a little ways "GTK compile problems")

BluePyre 07-14-2004 03:41 PM

I've never had any troubles with Kopete and the send button either....
I think its some kind of conspiracy to decrease everyones IM productivity

do u have anti-alias turned off? gaim .79 looks fine w/ antialias on...but too fuzzy for my taste. i.e. on gaim.59, my fonts look like a windows font....nice a crisp text w/o jagged edges. on the gaim .79, text is readable...but jagged.
