Subversion for Filesystem Backups

I've been thinking lately about versioning my filesystem (well, /etc/, /home, and /boot ) and keeping the repos on an external hard drive. I've read a few posts from people who've done this, and it seems that by-in-large no one thinks this is a bad idea.

Do you think this is a good idea? Why or why not?

Dunno.

I just sync mine to a flash drive. Its a good way to restore all of your settings in case of a system failure. I just prefer having them in two places over one. For /etc just some config files (xorg.conf and such) and /boot I don't bother. Gonna search and see why people are backing it up though. Thanks.

If I have to re-install, just cp /home to my new install and I have my settings and personal files back.
