Subtitle ripping with acidrip (or menoder)

Hello, I have been using acidrip to backup some of my DVDs. It works great, but I haven't figured out yet how to rip the subtitles in a text format like subrip or microddv format.
Is mencoder capable of ripping via OCR the subtitles just like subrip in windows ?
I have managed to rip the subtitle stream in *.idx and *.sub format using acidrip but now I would like to obtain the SRT text file out of it...how is this possible ?
I prefer to stick with mencoder and acidrip as it is friendly enough for me , and I don't have an alternative either because I can't get dvd::rip to work (problems with Pixbuf.pm gdk library)
any ideas ?
