how was the first compiler compiled?

maybe it wasn't... maybe it was written straight to machine readable code

yeah. Compilers were built up as languages evolved. Firt one just compiled assembly code to hex. and it was written in hex. Another can be written in assmebly and compiles into assmebly and then can be assembled into machine code. etc...
