stretch xorg display?

I have a freevo box using an nvidia card for tv out. It is working acceptibly good. One thing I would like to fix is this. On my 27 inch television, there is about a 1inch space of black above and below the picture. I would like to be able to stretch this image to fill the whole tv.

bump

has anyone had similar problem or success at fixing this? Does this seem like an nvivda issue or more just a general xorg issue.

what is "overscan"? can that be used to enlarge my image on the tv? I don't mind if I lose a little of the picture on the left and right sides, so long as I get all of the tv screen filled vertically. Is there an option in my xorg.conf that would allow this?

What is the big deal of that black space? It's very common with tv-out because the resolutions of monitors and tvs are not the same. (Though, IIRC, the aspect ratio should be).

if I am watching full screen stuff it does not really bother me. When I am watching a widescreen movie, which is already very small on my tv, gets even smaller.

when I used this same card with windows, the nvidia drivers allowed me to stretch the display, I was hoping I could do this with linux also.

If I understand you correctly, what you want to do is stretch out a widescreen move to fill up your 4:3 screen. Your movie player may be able to do this for you. In Xine, for instance, pressing 'a' toggles through aspect ratios.
