Streaming Video problems

I've been searching threads and posting to a few different ones in an attempt to figure out my problem, but it is only creating more confusion for myself so I'm starting my own repeat of that which has probably been covered a lot. Sorry to those who care, Thanks to those who don't.

I am converting my mom over to Linux at her house. The last step to keep her from doing it is she likes to watch religious videos online. (in WMA or QuickTime format) So far, I've been unable to get a linux box using firefow to display them. I've downloaded mozplugger hoping that Firefox would be able to see them. No luck. I downloaded the extensive codecs from mplayer, downloaded mplayer itself from the Mandriva repository. I got libdvdcss from PLF installed. Fired up Firefox, tried it and nothing. I also downloaded a plugin that would let Kaffeine display streaming video online, and no luck with that either. So, I figure I am missing something. Either there is a configuration issue that is keeping Kaffeine from showing the video, or I am missing another component. Mplayer buffers the file, then thinks it is playing it but I don't get audio or video. If someone can let me know what I am missing I would appreciate it.

No streaming video, mplayer, firefox mdk10.1

I can't get streaming video working either. A lot of people are having this problem across distros but no one seems to know how to fix it? What I keep seeing is audio works fine, but video doesn't play. Mplayer is installed via the rpm stuff with all the skins-fonts-guis-plugins, Firefox 1.0.7, and KDE 3.2. When the audio is playing but the video isn't, you see this text:

mplayerplug-in
Embedded Video Player for Mozilla
Playing mms://(some address)

The buttons and controls work.

Please help!!!

streaming

Have you tried downloading one and running it from the download? Sometimes that gives you more info.

streaming

CNN or MLB for example use .wmv and it seems that wmv is what is causing the problem for my mplayer. Since its "streaming" video, they don't let you download it ... at least I can't figure out how to get something off of cnn.

Is there a configuration file for mplayer where a setting could be wrong?

Is there a website that checks mplayer configurations for various formats?

I installed Realplayer and that works fine for sites that give you options of what player to use like ifilm.com.

But alas, I can't figure out Mplayer!!!!!!

If mplayerplug-in starts and the buttons work, It sounds
like a codec problem.
You should install the win32 codecs before installing MPlayer.
Make sure you know where the codecs go., I always used to put
them in /usr/lib/win32, but then I always installed MPlayer from source.
So find out where your distro puts them and make sure that they
are there before installing MPlayer.

If you run some kind of net monitor (gkrellm or whatever) when
mplayerplug-in starts, you can watch the download, when it stops,
pause the vid, right click on it and choose save to /home/foo/wherever.

With MPlayer,

mplayer -dumpstream mms://whatevertheaddressis

The created dumpfile is playable with MPlayer.

But anyhow, it sounds like you guys are having codec trouble.

Ok from lots of other threads ... how to get streaming video working (sort of)on mandrake 10.1 and mplayer for newfolk like me:
1. setup sources (repositories) using http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/
2. go to System->Configuration->Packaging->install software
3. seach by name and install mplayer, mplayer_gui, mplayer_skins, and mplayerplug-in
4. open terminal and login as su
5. go to /usr/lib and mkdir win32
6. go to http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/codecs.html and download the essential codec package to your win32 dir. Look for the line "Linux on an x86 processor, you should grab the <essential codec package>"
7. then tar -jvxf essential.tar.bz2, that will create a directory call essential... move all the contents into /usr/lib/win32
8. then you're all set, for mlb.com or cnn.com, still having intermittant trouble with ifilm.com

Also, I still have a sync problem in audio and video that I haven't figured out yet.

Hi, I'm not familiar with your distro (I Use FC4), but I belive you should have your win32 codecs in a directory such as /usr/lib/codecs not /usr/lib/win32.

Also the codecs should be the first thing installed before mplayer.

Hope you get it working. I use mplayerplug-in and can view cnn, yahoo, and many others.

OK, the directory was ok but the trick was to install the codecs BEFORE mplayer...

Now I have mplayer working (apart from some configuration problem with alsa driver), but Kaffeine still refuses to play wmv9. Should I try to uninstall and re-install it, or there is maybe some Kaffeine config file somewhere to edit? I searched for it but I did not find anything..
