streaming audio

a couple of buddies and i are going to compile our cd's together and have a little station for ourselves.

would any one know of a program to use for the streaming? i don't know if xmms can do this, i know that it can grab the audio from the web, but i don't think that i can put it there.

i've taken a look around, and it seems like the programs that i have found are shareware. which is something that none of us want. so open source would be the way to go.

i know about the shit with the riaa, yet if this station is only for us, and we have all of the disks, they really can't do anything about it. well, hopefully.

thanks

Is this all going to be on a local LAN, or will this be broadcast over the net?

You can look at programs like:
NetJuke
And for the streaming:
icecast.org (main backbone)
The "clients" might be most happy with NetJuke as there really aren't going to be a lot of PC's that won't have browsers that ARE capable of streaming the music.

Cool

it's going to be broadcast. yet the thing about it is we're going to find a way to have it password protected. also the ip will only be known to the couple of us.

i've told others and they think that it would be cool if they could join, but since i don't know if they actually have the cd, or if it's just a copy, i've had to say no. that's one of the reasons that it's just a couple of buddies and i, just to protect ourselves.

thanks for the references.
cheers.
