stream desktop as mpg/avi?

Hi all,
I currently have a vnc setup where a computer is able to view videos I am playing on my machine, but it's terribly slow and has no sound (as is the common argument against it). Is it at all possible to capture the entire screen and audio, and provide it as a low quality streaming video? Basically like a streaming video version of vnc (with sound)?

The purpose of this is so if I have a video playing on the main media computer (on the tv), I can then walk in to another room and continue viewing a low res version of whatever is being shown on the tv. Input isn't needed from the client machines as it will be acting just like a tv.

It seems there's x11vnc which is close as it captures the desktop (that's what i'm using now), and videolan which has the streaming element to it - I just need something that merges the two. Any ideas on tweaks or anything that might do the trick?

IMO, you should just use a streaming server. The main TV would show the stream, and so would other "fake TVs" if you wish so. That is how MythTV works for example.

Yves.
