A strange problem happened to me with VLC 3.0.12 on Kubuntu 21.04... basically if I go to open a video while it is in use by another program (for example I had opened a video while it was in use from the system settings, because I use a plugin to have the animated wallpaper, while the second time I still opened the same video but this time it was in use by OpenShot) the system crashes completely. Only the pointer stuck on a black background remains and no key combination (for example the classic CTRL + ALT + F2) manages to make me open a text shell from which I can reboot, so I am forced to power off the system from the shutdown key.
Has this ever happened to any of you? Do you know if maybe it's a known bug?
VLC opens RO. Openshot opens RW. Frankly, I think you deserve what you're getting, and I would suggest not doing what you're doing, not fixing the "problem" but working around it.

What you mean that I deserve what I’m getting? I’m just trying to figure out if it’s a common behaviour or if it happens only to me.
How is it in any way acceptable for the entire OS to crash when simply trying to access a locked file?
Whether or not it's common practice to try and view a file that is currently being edited is irrelevant, and suggesting aliquo93 somehow "deserves" an unrecoverable crash for daring to do something uncommon is utterly ridiculous.
aliquo93: This may be a bug in VLC and/or a bug in Kubuntu/Ubuntu - if OpenShot has locked the file, you should be receiving a suitable error message when trying to open it in something else (e.g. "file locked by another application") - though even if VLC is causing the crash, the fact that you can't switch to a console suggests an issue in Ubuntu, so I'd be tempted to raise issues with both, though maybe start with VLC to see if they can shed more light on what's going wrong.
