i am a Linux beginner~ so i am trying to install gaim~so i can get help from my friend in my rh9.0 linux~

it was quit hard to install gaim 0.68, but i thiought i finished it~

i learned how to install it from a Thread "Gaim and libgtkspell.so.0 question" sorry~ i can't post url

first install gtkspell-2.0.2-1.i386.rpm and then install gaim-0.68-1rh9.i386.rpm, everything was done well by now~

but when i open it, few seconds later ( it's about 4 or 5 seconds0 gaim shut down by itself~ it is so strange for me, so did i do something or installed a wrong gtkspell ??? thx~

launch gaim from the command line

open a terminal and type gaim

note what messages the terminal displays and post it here

there is a .gaim directory that stores all your settings.

It's in your home directory so if you use it as root it's in /root/.gaim I usually log in as myself (not root) so cd ~/.gaim will get you in the right spot.

Alright, open up a console... Konsole or Gnome Terminal, depending on what desktop you're in.

Then, at the prompt, type gaim and hit enter. watch for what messages it displays when it closes down. It will display an error message or two. Once you get those, post the error messages here and we can help you.

We don't know what's going on. More than likely, it's a missing library or a conflict somewhere.

I had a similar problem with an earlier version of GAIM. I traced the problem down to when it connected to the MSN network. All other networks worked fine (that I have). It would log into the MSN network and start loading the buddy list and then shutdown/crash. When I upgraded I no longer had the problem. You could try to completely uninstall the current version of GAIM, even log and database files. Then try reinstalling it and use one of the past three releases of it. I have had the best luck with them.

type
rpm -q gaim
to check which versions of gaim do you have

now delete them/it with
rpm -e gaim
and reinstall again, remember to backup blist.xml, it's the friend list file
