strange kernel issue

I'm running Source 9.1 and find that everything seems to work OK until or if I install the updated kernel after this is installed my CD ROM doors keep opening I have checked with my very limited knowledge to see what program is sending the eject command but have found nothing as I say this is with very limited knowledge of linux. Anyway I have chosen now not to update the kernel and the problem is not present. What are the benefits of updating the kernel and if it is a nessecity for the overall system if so what could be causing this quirky error.
