Strange fonts

After switching to xorg-6.8.0 some of my fonts began to behave strangely (eg. those that followed xorg). They were poorly rendered, and and some lost their proportions (thickness of the lines, see picture below).

I have tried it before (when freetype was updated I think; not sure), but when I restored /etc/fonts from a backup, it worked normally again. This time, however, restoring it didn't help.

edit: removed picture

Is it the font files that have changed? Freetype? Something about new paths (xorg vs. xfree)? And what can I do to repair it?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
