Strange Evolution Problem with POP3

A bizarre situation.

A OpenSuse 10.2 installation. XFCE4 as the desktop.

Evolution as the mail client with tried and true settings connecting to a POP3 server.

Error message is: Could not connect to <snip> Connection timed out.

The same settings within Thunderbird presents no problems.

The same settings within Evolution but on Debian/Fedora platforms...no problem.

So the question is: Why does Evolution fail to connect to my pop3 provider only on SuSE?
