Strange account lockout problem

I have RHEL3 WS (2.4.21-27ELsmp) with PAM installed and configured. One morning, I suddenly can no longer log in to my regular user account. Usually if the username/password pair is incorrect, there would be an error message to that effect. However, this time there is no such error message. I just get back the login prompt.

I logged into root and reset my passwd, then get back out and try again. No dice.

I logged back into root, unlocked my account with passwd -u (I did passwd -l and passwd -u a couple times and checked the shadow file to make sure that my account is unlocked), get back out and tried again. Again, no dice.

What the heck ?!!

Anyone has any idea? Thanks for any help.

Tomorrow, I will delete my regular user account, then create a new regular account with the same username AND userid. Hope that will fix the problem. However, I still don't know the root cause of the problem. Anyone has an insight?
