stopping a device on start...
 

i have been trying to get my panther xl joystick to work right...long story....but it works..i am using qjoypad to mape the buttons...and all is good:)

but...

the joystick has a trackball built in to it and it comes up if cat /dev/mouse2... i replaced the trackball (see the webpage below for details...)
i need to make it to wear mouse 2 will not load up....is their way to disable a device. the problem is that three of the joystick buttons are considered mouse buttons...i dont want them to be mouse buttons...i want them to be joystick buttons...:)...i mounted mouse buttons into the joystick...so i do not need them...

how do disable mouse 2???... i tried moving it out of /dev... but no dice...
the mouse that i want to disable is connected to the game port...is it a serial mouse?.... my regular mouse is mouse0 and the new trackball in the joystick is mouse1....

check your modules.conf or modprobe.conf files and see if they are in there, if so take them out.

it wasnt in modules.conf.... and i could not read modprobe.conf...

????

i cant read it.....if i open it in midnight comander...it shows nothing....but it does have a file size...

what kernel are you using?

youre prolly using modules.conf then and if its not in therei guess its built into the kernel not sure what to do there, i'll look around

it is there....i can see it...it just opens to a blank screen...

sweet...thats all i have to do to get this joystick to work right....

no shots please....but...

in windows ...all i would have to do is goto the device manager(winkey + pause/break)...all three mice would be seen in the device list...i would then right click on the offending piece of hardware and tick 'disable'...tick apply...tick ok....and the mouse would be ignored...whereas the joystick buttons would work...(this procedure would take all of about a minute)...so i know linux can do this......

the main problem is that when i hit these buttons both functions haapen...the mouse click and the joystick button...quite annoying....

anyway.... thanks for your help...and i look forward to getting it figured out....

does anybody around know how to do something as simple as ignoring a device???

one would think that an operation that would take less than a minute in 'other' operating systems would take about the same time or less in linux....isnt it suppossed to be better?....isn't one suppossed to have more control with linux?....

this problem, which has plagued me for months, is not yet solved.....i am sure that somebody knows how to do something as simple as disabling a device in linux.....(it sould take less that a minute...FYI)

linux can do this right?.....you do have the 'control' in linux to disable a device right?....

i once could get rid of a joy-device by setting it chmod a-r in the /dev. the prob was that quake filled the console 'bout problems closing the device, which had hurt fps ;-)

i dont want to get rid of the joystick device(/dev/js0)..

what i want is to ignore mouse2.... thats all...thats it... seems a pretty simple affair, no?

i thought something like that would a piece of cake...i guess we spend so much time in linux getting our various devices to work....that once we get them working....we have no idea how to turn them off.....
