Question still having problems with tor

Hi folks,

I am still having problems finding & installing tor files. i type apt-get install tor and i get the following back.
"
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root? "

I can't even find the files to download!

I expect that I am doing something really stupid but I am at my wits end. Please some one help me. I am not very good at basic linux commands yet(old dos freak)

Regards

You'll have to provide more information, before anyone can help you. You don't say what distribution of Linux you're using, or what version. Also, the error message says "are you root?".....are you???

Trying to install a package without being root will fail, because you don't have permission to modify the system. Just like in Windows, if you don't have admin privileges, you won't be able to do certain things.

Oops sorry! I'm using ubuntu 7.5 How do I check if i am root? I am the only user and have only one password. Thanks for looking at this.

p.s. just ordered new pc with ubuntu version 8.0 pre-installed. Will this make it easier?

Regards

No..if you're not root, it's the same thing. If you log in as user 'fred', you're user 'fred', not root. At a prompt, type in "su - root", then type in your root password. Your prompt should change to have a "#" at the end. Typing in "whoami" will tell you which user ID you're using.

I run openSuSE 10.2, and if you want a faster way to log in as root ( I don't know if it works on ubuntu...) try just typing "su" with the password. I believe root is the default...

It does, and it works on most flavors of *nix too. I'm just an old-timer...

itbod, on ubuntu there usually is no seperate root account. You should just type sudo apt-get install tor
The error you get is from apt-get and has in itself nothing to do with tor.
Oh, and should you be prompted for a password, use the password you normally use when you log into your system.
