statistical packages
 

Hey all

I'm (hopefully!!) going back to school this year and need an open source Linux friendly statistical package - kind of like an SPSS or such.
I used to use ViSta (Forrest Young's Lisp-based package) when I used Windows years ago, but having recently revisited his site, I can't say that I am feeling particularly inclined to sample his Unix/Linux offering.
I would be really interested in hearing suggestions please. Basically, I'd be looking for a suite that includes the usual ANOVA, and inferential calculations as well as (as an extra special bonus!!!) cluster analysis and SSA or MDS.
Any suggestions???

I've heard that SPSS is now available for linux if you can afford it. Your school may have a site license; they do at U of I. There's also an open source alternative called PSPP though I haven't used it:

PSPP isn't listed in the http://www.gnu.org/software directory. I've written to gnu to alert them of this, but will keep looking in the meantime.

Sorry this was meant to be ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/psp. The */pspp directory doesn't exist on that tree.

Here's another one called SalStat:

The download is available on SourceForge(see download link) and there's links to other linux stat packages. Again, haven't tried any of them but some of the projects look interesting.

Thanks Kilgoretrout. I didn't find references to SalStat when I googled nor when I went through freshmeat. I am very appreciative of your help. I have also had a brief flurry of communication with one of the PSPP developers who has been quite helpful, so I am hoping that I'll be able to compare PSPP and SalStat soon.
I did download and install ViSta, but Professor Young obviously has not spent much time figuring out how to port ViSta to Linux, or he hasn't had too much support, which is a pity because I used to like using ViSta.
