StartX Problems. Prevention and Cure Questions.

On occassion I get to encounter a startx problem when installing a new package (e.g. Wine), etc. How can I prevent or cure a startx problem especially the ones that can't be fixed by resetting?

Will this has something to do with backing up a particular file. I'm pretty much crippled when it comes to manipulating Linux via text-mode.

Using RedHat 9.
