Startup time Openoffice.org
How do you rate 5 seconds startup time for Openoffice.org on a HP Pavilion 8882. Some times it feels slow, but what can I expect of a 1.2Ghz CPU?

I think 5s is quite good. Takes longer then that in my Pentium 4 - 2GHZ. I have only 256 RAM in this machine, however. Either way, OpenOffice has always been slow to start up, but I found it pretty damn good if 1 - You don't need 100% compatibility with MS Office and 2 - You are not trying to import _huge_ MS files.
If the open time botters you, give a shot to applications such as Abiword (word processor) and gnumeric (spreadsheet). Regards! |
5 seconds
Wow, I wish - on my 500 MHz K6-2 running either SuSE 9.2 & KDE 3.3, or Windows 98SE, it took over a minute... |

If it takes too long to start try using:
"OpenOffice.org Quickstarter is a small application that runs in the KDE SystemTray. It is used to quickly start the different OpenOffice.org modules without having to go through the K-Menu. Instead of just starting of applications, you can also select multiple files in the usual opendialog provided by KDE to open them in OpenOffice.org, use a history of recently opened files, configure the app to do one of the above described functions on a simple double click, and use the app to keep a hidden instance of OpenOffice.org in memory to achieve much shorter startup times of the OpenOffice.org modules." http://freshmeat.net/projects/oooqs/?topic_id=57%2C131 Takes anywhere from 5-10 seconds to start on my system 1.8Mhz Athlon, 512MG ram. |
an other thing you can do is go into the options and under RAM increase the 5M to 30 or 50M, this will greatly increase the startup times even in windows.
