hdparam DMA and startup issue

I have a DVD drive on my old laptop. The DVDs were playing EXTREEMLY choppy so i looked at the output of hdparam /dev/dvd and found that IO support was only at 16 bit. I set it to 32 bit and DVDs play great. My question is this: Where can i place this command so it will be executed on boot?

Also, does anyone know why i cant set DMA mode?

sony:/home/mark# hdparm -d1 /dev/dvd

/dev/dvd:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma = 0 (off)

Because only root has the permissions to set such devices with such commands.

have you tried putting the command in the /etc/profile (or the safe file that does the same thing (it would say in the /etc/profile if there is a safe file))?

Put it in your /etc/rc.local file.

do what Brian1 suggests it will work better, but the /etc/rc.local can be mean and hide under different names (/etc/rc.d/rc.local, /etc/rc.boot, /etc/rc.d/boot.local are some other possibilitys) and some things will not yet be started when the rc.local file is executed, so you may have to put a sleep command in front of it.

This might help, found it on a quick google of the net. Let us know if it works.
#
# Is there way to enable-disable DMA on an ide cdplayer.
#

cp /etc/sysconfig/harddisks /etc/sysconfig/harddiskhdX

where hdX == your cd rom drive. This will enable DMA on it. YMMV.
