starting/stopping a service from terminal

Hi guys,

continuing with my desire to do everything from the terminal I would like to know how to start and stop services from the terminal without actually going into the red hat GUI. got a starters book for this sort of thing but can't seem to find that.. may be a bit too advanced for the book :-)

Any help would be great.

Thanks

I believe what you are looking for is

/etc/rc.d/init.d/'Name of Service" stop/start/restart

Of course this is for RedHat

Just go take a look in the /etc/rc.d/init.d directory for the services that can be restarted that way

Also, look into chkconfig For example....

chkconfig --level 3 crond off
That will turn crond off for level 3. To hit more than one level, use this...
chkconfig --level 12345 crond off

More info with man chkconfig

Also, in Redhat you can shortcut with something like this....
service iptables stop

On Slackware I know it's /etc/init.d, not /etc/rc.d/init.d.

You can also use "top" in the terminal, works a lot like KSysGuard does.
