Starting ssh server

I am using Ubuntu 11.10.

This issue has been riased before but the solutions I have seen do not work on my system. One solution given is to type the following.

Code:
sudo /etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd start
However sshd does not exist anywhere on my system. Another solution given in a Ubuntu forum is

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start
However there is no ssh in /etc/init.d/

I tried

Code:
sudo ssh start
and got

Code:
ssh: Could not resolve hostname start: Name or service not known
Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Peter.

Are you sure you have it installed?

Take look at
Code:
apt-cache policy ssh
and
Code:
apt-cache policy openssh-server

Is it possible you have not yet installed sshd?

To install from the command line:
Code:
$ sudo aptitude install openssh-server
Or use your GUI "Ubuntu Software Center".

edit: too slow.

and
Code:
apt-cache policy openssh-server
I got

Code:

Does that mean it's not installed?

Thanks,
