starting GNOME
Hey , I am running unstable debian. I have GNOME 2.4 and GDM. When GDM starts up I
always have to choose to failsafe or it will simply not boot into GNOME, usually sending me a blank fvwm, or metacity screen. Even if I log in, then log out and try "last" it will not get me in either. Is this a problem that seems easily fixable? Should I just apt-get remove gdm, metacity, gnome and then try again? If so, what order should I do all that stuff in. Thanks ben |
try locating files in your user directory begining with .gnome and alike
delete these directories and try to start gnome again It should help these are .gconf .gconfd .gnome*.* |
thanks alot. That worked great. Do I get the same result if I apt-get remove --purge?
Anyways it worked fine. Thanks. |
I don't know. I'm not using apt-get as it didn't work for me the first time and I thought what the hell. But from what I see I think hat apt-get remove would actually remove your GNOME GUI. And you would be left without a GUI. I don't think apt-get remove would get you the same results. The directories you deleted were just config files for gnome and your personal preferences. You didn't delete any important files for the existance of GNOME.
Gnome does funny stuff sometimes. In such cases just delete these directories and it should reload nicely. I prefer KDE beceause there are no such problems with KDE. Glad to help! |
