Starting CapiSuite failed- answering machine sucks in linux?

Hi,

I have installed CapiSuite paquage in my Mandrake 10.1 Community. A message said it was installed succesfully. Then I did nothing else, I mean, did not open the fax application (I switched my PC off, went to sleep).
This morning I switched on my PC and during booting I observed a failure message (I copied the problem part from /var/log/messages):

May 25 09:52:42 localhost capiinit: ERROR: cannot open /dev/capi20 nor /dev/isdn/capi20 - No such file or directory (2)
May 25 09:52:43 localhost capi4linux: Demarrage de capiinit failed
May 25 09:52:43 localhost capisuite: Can't open log file. Writing to stdout.
May 25 09:52:43 localhost capisuite:
May 25 09:52:43 localhost capisuite: Can't open error log file. Writing to stderr.
May 25 09:52:43 localhost capisuite: FATAL error: not allowed to write to stdout in daemon mode.
May 25 09:52:43 localhost capisuite: Demarrage de capisuite failed

Does anyone have installed this program? If so, please, kindly tell me if the above problem is:
- because the modem (PCI card USRobotics 56 K Voice/fax) needs to be configured?
- or is the fax server that is not connected (or linked) to the modem?
- which tool or command is used to configure capisuite?

By the way I have installed HylaFax both client and server, but dont know how to configure. I asure you that I looked for the manual, but got things really superficial explanations. Please dont RTFM-me, I really did some effort, but i dont understand how all that software and hardware should be put together.

Even a list of steps to do instructions will pave my way out.

(Incredible! I remember 12 years ago I was sending faxes with Windows 3.1 and my tiny PCMCIA Fax modem USRobotics 14K in my 386MHz IBM ThinkPad, using USR software that was installed in a wink and very user friendly. And look at me now!

Thanks Linuxians.

I forgot to mention that I want to set a phone/fax answering machine in my linux box. How many of you are using that stuff? Is it working or is just for only experienced hakers ?

Hi Maxel.
I know how you feel. I have had fax problems for a couple of months ever since I got this new box and installed Suse.
A while ago I had a fax / virtual printer listed amongst my printers.
Since I had to violently remove a bad USB modem, I have no fax function. I also have updated capifaxsuite and hylafax,
(I have not seen any capifax related problems in dmesg or elsewhere.)
Also, I have had about 12 years using windows with modems. Last five years pretty trouble free.
When I got this new box windows (ME) started having a problem with my internal modem. So I got a USB modem: both ME and Suse really hated that.
So for the sake of ease I got an external modem recently. Windows problems were solved. Suse problems with modem seemed to be solved too. But where is my fax / printer?
Documentation has a big gap in the fax printer / virtual printer area.
Sorry I can't actually help you at all -- but I will be watching this thread. And I will let you know if I find out anything useful.
Good luck.

Hi again Maxel,
First step in configuring Hylafax seems to be to open a terminal and run faxsetup. (i.e. just type "faxsetup"). This at least gets Hylafax friendly with your modem.
Also you will need a "getty", e.g. mgetty, egetty -- whatever your distro has. Seems to be crucial for fax receiving.
I still cannot send a fax.
(Latest problem is that ksendfax says that usr/bin/faxspool doesn't exist. Wish I knew how to make it exist. I don't even know whether it should be a file or a folder.)
Again, good luck.

Hi spindles, thanks for your interest (By the way, my name is Maxei not Maxel).

I have run #faxsetup and, except for a message like "Warning: /bin/egetty does not exist or is not an executable program" the rest was smooth. It seems that this freaking warning message keeps always coming up since years ago (I checked in the web other posts) and aparently has no bad effect in seting hylafax (it also shows the lack of care of the developers- Oh my! this program is as convoluted and confused as their f**g brains! ). That damned egetty nobody knows what the $$$$ is it by the way.

And yes, my modem seems to have been configured during that time (faxsetup invoked faxaddmodem . I latter check the file /etc/inittab and confirmed that a line was added like this:
# t0:23:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyS0 . Of course, I changed the last device to ttyS4 which is where my modem is.

So, when iI type the comand : $/usr/sbin/hylafax start I get:

/usr/sbin/hylafax: line 143:kill6045) - operation not permited
/usr/sbin/hylafax: line 143:kill6055) - operation not permited
HylaFAX: faxq hfaxd (without old protocol & without SNPP support

I have no idea of what is that.

If I type the comand :$/usr/sbin/hfaxd I get the prompt $ in the next line. If the phone rings, the modem doesnot pick the signal up, so actually i cannot send nor receive faxes. I have spent countless hours trying to fish out any decent information. Nothing.

It is incredible. Linux is supposed to be a modern distro and look at this! I dusted out my old 486 Hz computer runing windows 3.1, installed the Delrina software (old as 10 years ago!) contained in two floppies (it took me less than 5 minutes to install it, and another 5 minutes to connect my external modem and WHAAAMMM on Linux (en plein dans la gueule!): I was receiving faxes right away!!! Fuck Hylafax! Fuck Capisuite!
