Cool Staroffice 8 problem lauching on red hat

HI guys,

I need your help.
Caracteristic of the machine:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 2)

****************************
Hardware Information *
****************************

3.1 CPU type (Pentium/Athlon/UltraSparc, Mhz/GHz):

AMD Athlon 64-bit, 1.8GHz

3.2 RAM (size):

1.5 Gig

3.3 Video card (model and vendor):

nVidia GeForce FX 5600XT

3.4 Printer (model and vendor):

HP Photosmart 8150

****************************************

While I was able to install soffice 8, unfortunately it hangs when launching in Gnome, even after modifying the soffice script to include the recommended fix per the readme file. When launching any soffice application from menu, it did not start and did not provide any error messages.

Below are my detailed notes on how things proceeded.

<<<< Installation file >>>>
I re-downloaded the StarOffice installation file (just to be sure I've got the right stuff) and extracted the file.
The file name is "so-8-pp1-bin-linux-en-US.sh".

<<<< First install attempt>>>>
Initial attempt resulted in a bunch of errors with existing installations of OpenOffice2.01 and OpenOffice1.x.
For a clean install and to play it safe, I removed all rpms related to prior OpenOffice installations.

<<<< Second install attempt>>>>
[root@localhost RPMS]# rpm -ivh *.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
/etc/SuSE-release is needed by staroffice-suse-menus-8.0.1-145.noarch

Since I'm on RedHat linux, I located the SuSE-related rpm package in the RPMS folder and renamed it so that it would not be loaded. I mention this because I'm not sure why I received an SuSE rpm.....could I have been provided the wrong installation files? Can't tell from the file name I downloaded ("so-8-pp1-bin-linux-en-US.sh"). This is just an fyi in case it has a bearing on your debugging.

<<<< Third install attempt >>>>
[root@localhost RPMS]# rpm -ivh *.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
package jre-1.5.0_06-fcs (which is newer than jre-1.5.0_03-fcs) is already installed

I renamed the jre rpm as well so it would not be included in the rpms loaded.

<<<< Fourth install attempt >>>>
[root@localhost RPMS]# rpm -ivh *.rpm

While the programs installed with no error, when launching soffice in Gnome it hangs and then ends with no error messages provided.

<<<< Fifth and final install attempt >>>>
Reviewed readme file to see if any issues can cause soffice to hang. Found recommendation to unset SESSION_MANAGER.
Per instructions, I added the command "unset SESSION_MANAGER" to the beginning of the soffice file.

Unfortunately the same result occurs - launching in Gnome (same thing in KDE) causes it to hang and then ends with no error messages provided.

Please some help about this issue!!!

Regards,
