Staroffice 7 versus Libreoffice - Memory Usage Comparison

1 Attachment(s)
Hello

I was working on a doc file, but the file was corrupted under Libreoffice. Alternative to give more tests? Here came this thread, by curiosity.

I would like to test the Staroffice 7 versus Libreoffice - Memory Usage Comparison.

To run Staroffice 7, it is easy:

Code:

wget http://www.staroffice.org/SO7/so-7-ga-bin-linux-en.bin
chmod +x so-7-ga-bin-linux-en.bin
cd
cd staroffice7/program/
./soffice.bin

du -hs ~/staroffice7/ gives 275Mb. Very tiny for all what it can offer.

Staroffice 7 takes 134852
LibreOffice 4.3.3.2 takes : 203624 + 26648
Libreoffice takes about the double of memory.

Result, I believe that using Libreoffice is not so much needed if you need memory. There are poor configuration (like my cheap notebook) that can take benefits of using less memory for a simple doc file.

Staroffice 7 is really cool actually already.

But why not to install Calligra, KDE Office,.....? It makes really no senses to use mimimalist softwares today, right?

That's the 2003 version of StarOffice! There'll be quite a few features missing, like pdf export.

If you really need a small system, then I think Abiword will be smaller. Ted and Pathetic Writer certainly will be.

The difficult thing is that TeD and Pathetic Writer aren't supported on all distros (no longer into repositories), because no one wants to use that. It looks too old. Motif is non longer used today. GTK has changed the face of Linux.

It takes so much time to compile TeD and Pathetic Writer. About 1.5 hours to make everything work.

If I want to compile abiword from source for a learning experience of abiword, it looks complicated, since there are many many deps on Devuan.

Code:

The following NEW packages will be installed:

I used to like StarOffice. Actually bought it a long time ago. Kind of surprised it is available.

Not sure what you are getting now on that site. Without any sort of control you could have anything downloaded.
