First off, do you have wine installed? If so it should be a simply matter of running from a console:

wine /mnt/cdrom/setup.exe

...where /mnt/cdrom/ is the location of the starcraft cd and setup.exe is the setup executable (it might be something other than setup.exe, open the cd's autorun file up with a text edit to see which file is the setup file).

It should work since starcraft's a fairly old and basic game. If it doesn't work, I've never tried debugging wine so someone more qualified than I will have to reply :).

Maybe WineX is more appropriate for games than Wine
.. the problem is that WineX is not free

starcraft and wine

I installed Starcraft from wine successfully, but when I go to play it it tells me:
Data File Error
Starcraft is unable to read a required file. Your Starcraft CD may not be in the CDROM drive. Please ensure that the Starcraft disc is in the CDROM drive and press OK. Toleave the program, press Exit.

I have checked the CDROM path in the registry and it is fine.

i also get an error messege before that one saying that starcraft must be ran on a windows machine (not in those words but thats what its saying)

anyone have any suggestions?:cry:

u need to add ur cdrom into the wine config

zexter 11-08-2004 09:46 AM

how do i do that?

Ry12 11-08-2004 02:44 PM

http://www.frankscorner.org/winetools/
install that and run the cdrom thing

zexter 11-08-2004 05:26 PM

this is what the wine config file says about my cdrom drive

[Drive D]
"Path" = "/mnt/cdrom"
"Type" = "cdrom"
"Label" = "CD-Rom
; make sure that device is correct and has proper permissions !
"Device" = "cdrom"

what should it say so i can play starcraft because when i try to play it says the cd isnt in the cdrom!
or what should i do to get this game up and running?

-thanks in advance

try changing "Device" = "cdrom" to the device name of ur cd-rom
for me it would be "Device" = "/dev/cdrom1"
if u dont know what the device name is check /etc/fstab
try this if u still can't get it working http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.p...c937841c4eed84
