What exactly do you mean when you say, you "switched", yo manually installed an upgraded version of the XFree86 4.x.x?
It could just be your video card...eventhough staroffice is not really all that graphical, it's a big program to load on memory, and also in video card, if you are forcing your resolution that program can cause your computer to freeze. Tell me more about it.

star office freezes with 1024x732

once installed mandrake 8.1 the resolution i actually get is 800x600

i then reconfigure my display.
the video card is not detected originaly, although the xfree86 works fine with 800x600 (even staroffice).

my video xard is a S3 graphics twister K Compaq
this card is not in mandrake's list, so i choose a savage (generic), the configuration tool then asks me what xfree server i want, if i choose 3.x.x. then i will not get a 1024x768 resolution, if i choose 4.x.x i get the resolution i want.

why do i choose a savage (generic) video card?
will i tried many ad this one worked...

thank you for your help

ahhh, there lies the problem. If you cannot probe for the exact video card, then most likely than not, you will home some kind of draw back. You see, every time there is a drive for some piece of hardware specifically, it's supposed to be bale to use all the features of that specific hardware, we would hope. But, if you are using some other driver for something "similar" or just at random some driver that worked, you are pretty much guaranteed having some kind of problem with it. In this cas, you computer will freeze if ya go to a higher resolution than 800x600, at least when ever you run Staroffice. And perhaps some other program that may require some decent use of your graphics card. However, try and see if someone have made some driver for that specific card. Try google.
Or maybe even compaq.com. But hey....remember that brand name computers are the least flexible ones, you should just build your own. It is cheaper too, :D
