Standby in SuSE 9.1

Is this a common nightmare? I go to my command line and type in the command powersave --standby, only to have it tell me that the "admin" disabled it. Some poking around in powersave.conf fixed that. But now, when I run that command, the computer does not go into standby. It gives me a black screen where it says it's saving everything, and bounces the desktop right back to me. powersave --suspend (from what I understand) is the equavalent of the XP "hibernate" function; it saves the state to disk and shuts off the computer. That seems to work fine for me, but I want actual standby. Can someone hint at what I need to do?

Thanks.
