standard vs Expert install? Standard flubs up!
 

I have Mandrake Linux 8.1 on my computer. I also have Windows XP, and ME and use System Commander 7.0 to choose which one to boot into. Checking the Partition Commander, all is well. shows a nice little Linux area in my primary drive, and a swap file in my extend partition. Boots to whatever I choose.

Question is, when I do an install with booting from my Mandrake CD rom to install, if I choose standard, it really messes up in the video area and litterly hangs saying.. "respawning too fast" I have an Abit Siluro T400 AGP card 64MB. Should have GREAT graphics.. and it does in windows. When I install in expert mode I can get a Linux install with either KDE or GNOME, and it still has a bit of an issue with the video card. How come the standard doesn't take for this newbie?

Also I downloaded the latest driver kernel from nVIDIA for Mandrake, and burned it on my CD from Windows XP. I have it ready to put into Linux, but don't know how to get it to install , and not sure how to get it to read my CD ROM. I know R.T.F.M *S*

One other little thing.. In GNOME I have been told a way to "edit" the line in /etc/X11/XF86Configo-4 for my logitec mouse with wheel .. it's an optical wheel mouse!

I've tried to edit that line, and I DID find it, but it seems locked. I edited it with the power editor, and it wouldn't save. Also has a "O" with bar though it and pencil stating.. no writee!!! LOL

A way to unlock the file to edit?

Bah to the so called standard....the problem is mandrake and all the other distro's dont have the resources to test every hardware config, so there is a fail safe "expert" mode.....then you have distro's like slack where everything is text mode :)
It depends on what you downloaded, there are full install instructions in the readme.
You have to edit it as root.
