Squid limited to 3 concurrent downloads

Howdy,
I am using a stock install of squid on a gateway box. When a client browses through squid, it only allows 3 connections going at once.

For example, if a website has 6 pictures, it will download the first 3 straight away, then when one of those images is done it will move on to one of the remaining 3, keeping only 3 downloading at any one time.

Another example, if there are 2 clients browsing at the same time, and one has 2 downloads going (through the browser), the other will only be able to receive 1 image at a time, or one download. Nobody else will be able to access anything until one of those 3 slots are available again.

If squid is bypassed, the client downloads as many as it can (within a reasonable limit) at once. I have tried multiple config files, different kernels, different distros, different browsers/operating systems with no good result. Is there something I am missing such as a configure switch or a squid.conf option somewhere? Or have I got something enabled that is doing this indirectly?

Thanks for any help in advance.
