Question squid fully qualified hostname

I am running RH9 and have my hostname set to SAM. I have it set in my network and hosts and lmhosts as SAM as well. Whenever I try to run squid I get the following error message:

Aborted $SQUID -z -F -D 2>/dev/null

The service configuration status is as follows:

parseConfigFile:line 1967 unrecognized 'SAM'
FATAL:Could not determine fully qualified hostname. Please set 'visible_hostname'

my linux box is running as the PDC for the domain home. I have added .home to the squid.conf file in the visible_hostname section as

SAM.home

the result doesn't change.

I have run the hostname command from the terminal but it only gives me SAM as the result.

If there is another way to get the FQH or get squid to work properly.

not sure if it matters, but try changing SAM to a lowercase sam. check if that works.

do you really need to set the hostname in the config? squid uses whatever the gethostname() function returns by default.

if '/bin/hostname -f' doesn't work properly, you're better off fixing your /etc/hosts file.

what does line 1967 say exactly?
