This error happens frequently on RH machines from my experience. Simply set VISIBLE_HOSTNAME=
to the full hostname of your machine in your squid.conf and you should be set to go. I think it is caused by the automatic determination of the hostname failing.

Same
Hi, i am getting my own server up and running, using the new Ubuntu, i have installed apache2 and PHP5 and MySQL, then Squid. I have bin through all the documentation on the apache2 website and it tells you how to set up Squid, it said to set up visible_hostname, so i did. then it said i had to run the command: sudo /etc/init.d/squid restart
but then it said:
Aborted
FATAL: Could not determine fully Qualified hostname. Please set `visible_hostname`.
Squid Cache (Version 2.6.STABLE18): Terminated abnormally.
CPU Usage 0.028 seconds = 0.012 user + 0.016 sys
Maximum Resident Size: 0KB
Page faults with physical i/o: 0
Aborted
fail
I have set the visible hostname but to enable it i need to restart Squid, but to restart Squid, it needs to be already set. I dont get this at all. lol.
Any One Know??
Every where i have looked, like on here, everyone is having exactly the same problem.
Thanks
Luke.

i have a visable host name, which is:
visible_hostname Server1
but the bad parts are that the `visable_hostname` bit is actually part of the name and i cant get rid of it, and it still wont work
