Speed - Ubuntu Dapper vs. SUSE 10.1

Newbie question, so bear with me please =)

Here's my computer:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (2200 khz)
1 GB Ram
ASUS A8N-VM-CSM Motherboard with
nVidia GeForce 6150

ProView PL926Wbi WideScreen Flat Panel monitor.

Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake is a screamer, while OpenSuse 10.1 is slow as a turtle.

They're built off the same kernel, aren't they?

Can anybody tell me why this is?

Thanks in advance.

Ubuntu uses it's own Debian-modified packages, while SuSE has it's own software they put together themselves. Maybe that's it, or at least part of it anyhow?
