Speaking of SuSe... video help?

Hi all. I've actually been a 'simpleton' linux user of SuSe ever since ver 7.3. Currently using 9.1.

Kernel ver 2.6.4-52 / x86 64-bit

Ok, here's my question... SuSe of course can't include DVD capable Xine right? Well, I've tried everything I can think of over the last several days downloading SuSe 9.1 specific binaries, to tarballs, etc. and I cannot get xine to update. I have also used SuSe's online update as well just to see I got the lates greatest disabled versions of Kaffeine, etc. !! lol

No matter what I do, I get the same message "This version of Xine has only a reduced set of supported codecs. It is not able to play DVDs."

EVEN THOUGH I have installed libdvdcss, etc. It's like it doesn't know it.

Last bit here... I tried going to xinehq and downloading all current files and installing them. There were conflicts of course, so I figured I could just uninstall the current version of xine. NOPE, when I went into YAST and tried to remove xine, it was attached to like 128 objects it would have to remove along with it. And we're talking major objects like sound servers and such... what the? Remove them? Sorry,, but here is where my simplicity really shines.

OK sorry for the novel, and I apologize for my ignorance of the issue however I have made as many frustrating efforts as I can so far before troubling anyone. I've always been able to figure out anything I needed up to this point and now that I have a really nice system for the first time in a long time, I'd just like to see it play a DVD!

Take care everyone, and thanks for the help in advance.

-SG

Have you tried deleting the suse version of xine and installing the non-restricted version of xine from the packman site:

http://packman.links2linux.org/index...tion=124&vn=10

There are a few extra packages that you will need as shown at the bottom of the page.

Well, that's the problem. When I go into YAST and try to remove SuSe's packaged install of xine, it grumbles about over a hundred dependencies it will have to also remove if I do it.

I've dealt with linux just long wnough to know that removing just a few objects is enough not to BOOT next time! Beyond that I enjoy my sound system, etc. and it was talking about the sound system, networking, and other objects xine was 'connected' to that it would have to *remove* if I wanted to remove xine.

That really doesn't make sense to me, but I'm not sure. That's one of the things I was asking about.

Because I have in fact downloaded all of the binaries from PackMan's site you are talking about and have them sitting in a directory.

Thanks,
SG

Oh yeah, I also tried installing packages via YAST installation source and packman's site (using directory suse/9.1), but it only picked up 2 libraries. Xine and the rest were not available as packages to install.

Just an addition.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

I installed mplayer for SuSE 9.1 from one of Packman's mirrors - no problems.

Ok thanks! I'll try that. I've got it downloaded and tried to install it. Have a few dependencies to work out... so I'll see what I can do.

Here's the list I'm working on getting at the moment. In the meantime while I'm getting these, anyone shout out if something looks wrong about it.

Thanks again!
-SG

error: Failed dependencies:
w32codec-all is needed by MPlayer-1.0pre7try3-1
libdv.so.4 is needed by MPlayer-1.0pre7try3-1
liblirc_client.so.0 is needed by MPlayer-1.0pre7try3-1
liblzo.so.1 is needed by MPlayer-1.0pre7try3-1
libmp3lame.so.0 is needed by MPlayer-1.0pre7try3-1
libxvidcore.so.4 is needed by MPlayer-1.0pre7try3-1

(w32 codecs I'm installing with YAST via packman server, everything else I'm having to go get. I'll keep this updated when I'm done or I run into trouble again. Thanks much.)

Ok, here we go... perfect example of the dependencies upon dependencies upon...

linux:/home/nhoj/Incoming/xine # rpm -i libdv-0.104-1.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libXv.so.1 is needed by libdv-0.104-1
libpopt.so.0 is needed by libdv-0.104-1

Ok NOW after finding out I need libdv, I grab it, try to install IT, and get the above dependency issues, so I go to look for them, libXv.so.1 appears to be part of the entire Xfree86 package! Shouldn't I have that SOMEWHERE? Is this just yet another case of SuSe not quite having the same dir structure at times? Before I go and download something like 37MB could someone verify this necessity?

Thanks!!

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/

Download the rpms you need for your architecture.
Ignore YaST for this one.
Install as shown from the command line.

This has worked for me on all previous versions of SuSE I've used. In fact it's only the last update from 9.3 to 10.0 where I remembered to do it before attempting to play back DVDs first.

Cheers
Chris

MAN!! So close but no cigar...

I installed all of the (appropriate) RPMs on the page you told me about. The only one that gave me any trouble was the gui. It threw some .png errors out and it hangs on the splash screen whenever you try to call 'xine'.

Well, I figured what the heck, I'll try Kaffeine. Downloaded it, installed it, it also hangs while trying to load xine. I've made sure to check all my hardware settings to see if there might be some sort of polling issue, but I can't really see anything to speak of.

Any ideas??

Again... thanks for the help!

Take care,
-SG

Upon further investigation of that site, I found a link in the FAQ page to try disabling the direct hardware access to the video and trying software mode and it works perfectly, although not fullscreen very well of course, due to the fact I'm using crappy On-Board video for now untill Monday when I get to swap in my ATI card! We'll see if it likes that better. Probably so.

Thanks so much for the link, and wow was that so much easier!

Take care all!
