spamassassin? why not TMDA

I always hear spamassassin this spamassassin that. Why not TMDA (Tagged Message Delivery Agent) It sounds really cool? Does anyone around here use TMDA? I want some sort of spam filtering program to run seamlessly with postfix UW-IMAP and squirrelmail. There is just too much tweaking and variables involved for a newbie like me to get it to work properly. Understand how spamassassin works is proving difficult. Its been really hard, there is so much documentation on spamassassin that it is really hard to find the right procedures for my setup. But TMDA looks allot more simplistic. anyone have any thoughts on this.

I have yet to effectively install spamassassin on my server for site-wide filtering. I followed this links instruction exactly
with no luck.

TMDA is great in theory, but the problem I have run into is that a lot of users are resistant to it. It's a great option to include but not a sound case for a site-wide policy so I'd say implement it, but make it optional (heh - was gonna say 'opt-in').

As for spamassassin - it can be a bit of a chore to setup and a lot of that depends on your particular interface (squirrelmail in your case) to allow users to setup and maintain their own spam profiles. Start with the documentation for the squirrelmail plugins and work your way back to spamassassin.

Thanks mcleodnine

I just don't quite understand why the users are resistant to TMDA. Doesnt it work on the same concepts as spamassassin. TMDA isn't just white list black list its also a real spam filter from what I have read on their website.

I want to take it back about not getting spamassassin to work. I just didn't look close enough. There was a inbox created in the mail users directory that all of the incoming mail was transfered to. There was also a proc.log file (my guess is that procmail was doing some sort of sorting for me). I had no idea. Is this right? If so then how do I unsubscribe the users from /var/spool/mail/ in squirrelmail I do not see this option in the .../mail/config/ when run.

Also what about how my mail is sent with squirrelmail I would think that it must use the sendmail (postfix) option and not smtp with spamassassin (just a guess).
