SoundBlaster Live! techie problem

i have a SoundBlaster Live! Sound card using the emu10k1. i found the .rpm and the .bz2 files, and on webpages and video files i get sound. but when i use Gaim i can't hear any thing. all i here are the system beeps and bobbles inside the box... how can i get SBLive! to work within SuSE 9.1 Linux Fully? thank you

UsualTuxpect 09-07-2004 05:37 PM

please choose a diferent sound system for gaim ...

ull have a list of them in the gaim configuration...

try everything .

i think esound was the one that worked for me.....

Norin311 09-07-2004 11:43 PM

i tried that but it just won't work... only options i have are command or console beep... and if i choose command it does not work right. so please help me.. tell me how i can configure gaim to use other sounds than that system beep... there it is again.

check if u have arts or Esd installed and running

Norin311 09-08-2004 10:51 AM

:newbie: <--- again i reply... but i have to say i have only been on linux for about 3-4 days now as of this post and i have to ask. how do i find if arts or esd are installed?

UsualTuxpect 09-08-2004 11:59 AM

#locate artsd

that will give u the location where arts is..

to know more about arts daemon ---> #artsd --help

u can do one thing...

start up KDE..

go to ---> KDE Control center..

go to ---> Sound and multimedia..

go to --->Sound System ---> check if the option for start arts sound server on startup is checked..

check the --->System Notifications section [u could set up notifications for various applications using the media player of ur choice and also play different sounds...]

Norin311 09-08-2004 01:19 PM

:newbie: i couldn't find the check[ ] to see if arts would startup.
so i tried the other method.

i started konsole
su root
passwd: XXXXXXXXX
locate artsd
bash: locate: command not found

so what do i do?

i have no working experience on SUSE!! first of all... how i wish other Suse Brothers could contribute towards solvin your problem.....

any ways..

I am assuming that u havent gone with the full installation of suse on your system..

try

#whereis artsd

or #artsd --help

if it fails ... u dont have it installed on your system...

U could do one thing .. i have read in various posts that SUSE has this tool called Yast already installed [ http://www.suse.de/en/private/produc...prof/yast.html]

run Yast and try to install arts and Esound support .. from your SUSE CD... or through the net..

Norin311 09-08-2004 11:46 PM

:newbie: Suse Brothers?

any way.....

yes i do have a full install of SuSE 9.1 my comp is a full linux box now.

okies i did the whole artsd search and here are the results

+------------------------------------------------------+
| me-lewistoncuda1cable4a-83:/ # whereis artsd.|
| artsd: /opt/kde3/bin/artsd.........................................|
+------------------------------------------------------+

and yes SuSE 9.1 as far as i know [because that's what i use] does have YaST installed. it is basically a windows Update util. i am sure you know because other linux distros may have some similar programs for packages installs.

but the thing is.... how can i use YaST to install Esound support?
i do not know where to set the dir location or the URL to d/l from.

but thank you TUXpect you have helped gr8ly in my journey into the linux world.

U should have esound rpm in your Suse Cd 1... if u dont have then

1)download ----> esound-0.2.33-28.i586.rpm from

http://www.maxtux.co.uk/dist/suse/9....33-28.i586.rpm

2)download ---->esound-devel-0.2.33-28.i586.rpm

ftp://fr.rpmfind.net/linux/SuSE-Linu...33-28.i586.rpm

3) install them by doin the following..

$ su - [do this to change to root]

password ****** [enter ur root password]

#rpm -ivh esound-0.2.33-28.i586.rpm esound-devel-0.2.33-28.i586.rpm

that should do the installation of esound... if u have all the dependencies....

post back as to how it went....

best of luck...

Norin311 09-09-2004 09:29 AM

dependedncies not ok with esound devel
alsa-devel needed to install esound devel. i will try to find alsa-devel and the alsa client for SuSE 9.1 PE. thank you for this fine post

UsualTuxpect 09-09-2004 01:24 PM

You can find the dependencies here----->alsa-devel ...

ftp://fr.rpmfind.net/linux/SuSE-Linu...9.1/suse/i586/

after u install esound successfully...

2) open xmms --->preferences--->Audio I/o plugins---->Output plugins ---> Check if u have Esound output plugin [libesdout.so] and select it..

3)restart xmms

4) go to gaim --->tools-->preferences---->Sounds {See if esound shows up} ---> select it ---> goto
Sound events and select all the sound events u wanna turn on ---> highlight one of the events and
click on test... it should work even when u are listening to a song on XMMS [ ie. with esound output plugin selected]

5) if the above step fails

go to gaim --->tools-->preferences---->Sounds --->select Command --> in the text box "type" --->esdplay %s ---> goto Sound events and select all the sound events u wanna turn on ---> highlight one of the events and click on test... it should work even when u are listening to a song on XMMS [ ie. with esound output plugin selected]

Tell me how it goes...

Norin311 09-09-2004 09:50 PM
