Sound Troubles

i use a compaq presario and my volume changer is on my keyboard. when i configured my keyboard, i couldnt only find "Us" and "US international." i cant control the sound directly from my keyboard so when i start my computer it shakes the house with how loud it is. can someone explain how to configure this (i use mandrake 9.1)
