sound suddenly stopped in mandriva, working perfectly before

I am running Mandriva 2006 and yesterday my sound stopped working. It was working fine yesterday then suddenly all media programs would not play sound. There was no error message, just silence. Sounds works ok in windows. Kmix says all volumes are set to high. Nothing changes when i change some to low/mute. I do not know if it relevant but when i load alsamixer Master volume control is set to 00, but Master Mono is set to 100%. I can't change the very first Master volume control. I have not changed anything that i can recall. Maybe i tried to install Realplayer before it happened?

I tried to run the trouble shooting guides in "configure your computer" with the following result: [jimbo@localhost ~]$ lspcidrake -v | fgrep AUDIO snd-via82xx : VIA Technologies|VT8233 [AC97 Audio Controller] [MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO] (vendor:1106 device:3059 subv:1071 subd:8355) [jimbo@localhost ~]$ grep sound-slot /etc/modules.conf grep: /etc/modules.conf: No such file or directory [jimbo@localhost ~]$ /sbin/lsmod Module Size Used by sg 34044 0 scsi_mod 121064 1 sg binfmt_misc 8872 1 cpufreq_ondemand 5052 0 cpufreq_conservative 6116 0 cpufreq_powersave 1280 0 powernow_k8 11272 0 freq_table 3460 1 powernow_k8 radeon 76672 0 drm 60404 1 radeon raw 6592 1 md5 3584 1 ipv6 234016 154 snd_seq_dummy 2532 0 snd_seq_oss 31136 0 snd_seq_midi_event 5696 1 snd_seq_oss snd_seq 46960 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event snd_pcm_oss 48960 0 snd_mixer_oss 16896 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_via82xx 24256 1 gameport 11112 1 snd_via82xx snd_ac97_codec 83900 1 snd_via82xx snd_pcm 79784 3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_via82xx,snd_ac97_codec snd_timer 20548 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm snd_page_alloc 8392 2 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm snd_mpu401_uart 5664 1 snd_via82xx snd_rawmidi 19616 1 snd_mpu401_uart snd_seq_device 6828 4 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi snd 46116 13 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_via82xx,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mpu40 1_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device soundcore 7008 1 snd ipt_IFWLOG 2788 1 ipt_psd 43428 1 ip_set_iptree 5544 2 ipt_REJECT 4256 4 ipt_LOG 6272 8 ipt_state 1312 13 ipt_pkttype 1184 4 ipt_set 1920 2 ipt_CONNMARK 1696 0 ipt_MARK 1984 0 ipt_ROUTE 4260 0 ipt_connmark 1216 0 ipt_owner 2432 0 ipt_recent 9292 0 ipt_iprange 1312 0 ipt_physdev 1744 0 ipt_multiport 2112

Apologise in advance if i have included too much information. Unfortunately at this stage i can't simply reinstall Mandriva as my DVD/CDROM is not working correctly.......therefore i have to try and fix this without reinstalling. Cheers, james

try reinstalling alsa or anyother drivers that you have. That might work the bug out of the system

I completely formatted my / partition and reinstalled mandriva completely and the problem is still the same.

When i go to Kmix there is no master channel at all - only master mono.
When i go to alsamixer master is set to 00 and cannot be changed, whereas master mono is on full volume.
Is there a setting hidden in /home partition that is affecting this do you think?
