sound stopped working

I got sound working a long time ago, and it's been fine... but last night I did apt-get upgrade, and I noticed it updated some alsa stuff.... but now sound isn't working. When I try and run something like xmss or 'volume control', it says sound card isn't configured correctly.

When I try and run "sndconfig", it says:
A PCI sound card was found in your system. The details are:
Model: Unknown vendor | Generic│es1370 device

So I hit OK, and then I get:
An error occurred while writing the config file.

Any ideas? Here's my lspci:
0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX Host bridge (rev 03)
