Sound sharing by several apps

Is it not possible to have two apps use the sound card at the same time? On my nx7400, whenever I have a web page that has a background sound, I cannot use another sound application like rhythmbox or realplayer..

thanks

You need to have a sound daemon running such as artsd in KDE.

alsa also has a plugin called dmix.
sometimes it needs to be implemented with a file ~/.asoundrc
i'm not familiar with your sound card but if you google your soundcard with the term dmix or .asoundrc you should find examples.
