sound server fails at boot

I am trying debian - a fresh install of 3.0.2 on a fresh drive.
To keep it simple, I let the distribution choose what I got - did not run dselect, will add stuff later.
At boot, during kde initialization I get the following message:

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (permission denied)

This machine uses CRU dataports and my other drive, which runs redhat 7.2 and Windows98se
boots up and runs sound flawlessly with either redhat or Win98, so the hardware is OK.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks,

Roy

Hi Roy,
There's a similar thread here - the problem is solved by using chmod (as root) to change the file permissions of certain devices:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...003/01/2/40719
Try the chmod fix first and reboot.

It's also possible that your Linux sound driver isn't working with your hardware - this requires either reconfiguring the card with existing sound drivers or downloading, compiling and installing new sound drivers.
I'm not positive whether your release of Debian uses Alsa drivers for the sound server - the newer ones should do. You can check by doing this in a terminal:
Code:
whereis alsaconf
This should return a line saying something like:
alsaconf: /usr/sbin/alsaconf /usr/share/man/man8/alsaconf.8.gz

(You can get Alsa from alsa-project.org)

If you are using Alsa:
To reconfigure, run '/usr/sbin/alsaconf' (as root) in a terminal. Then alsamixer to set volumes.

Check this thread for getting a new driver:

Thanks for the help. I did #chmod 666, checked my permission
(xrw-rw-rw) and rebooted. Now the error messsage is
/dev/dsp does not exist.

It does though. i looked in /dev and found dsp and two or three other files like
dsp2 or such.

Maybe chmod 777? should any user be able to execute dsp,
or is it called by root during kde initialization?

Anyway, thanks and I will keep on tinkering with it.
