There's a similar thread here - the problem is solved by using chmod (as root) to change the file permissions of certain devices:

Try the chmod fix first and reboot.
It's also possible that your Linux sound driver isn't working with your hardware - this requires either reconfiguring the card with existing sound drivers or downloading, compiling and installing new sound drivers.
I'm not positive whether your release of Debian uses Alsa drivers for the sound server - the newer ones should do. You can check by doing this in a terminal:
This should return a line saying something like:
alsaconf: /usr/sbin/alsaconf /usr/share/man/man8/alsaconf.8.gz
(You can get Alsa from alsa-project.org)
If you are using Alsa:
To reconfigure, run '/usr/sbin/alsaconf' (as root) in a terminal. Then alsamixer to set volumes.
