Hello all. I am using the 64bit version of SUSE. The problem is when i use lets say for example Skpye, and then try to open up a music file it will not let me play the music file. It's like linux only supports one dedicated sound source at a time. In windows i can run skype, play music, games and so on without having conflicting sound problems. Does anybody know a work around with this?? I am using the onboard sound if you are wondering. Thank you for your time on this matter.

Alsa supports multiple applications at once. Perhaps you are defaulted to oss or something else in your applications. I'm able to watch multiple baseball games (i like baseball) with mplayer and alsa. I could not do that when it was defaulted to oss.
I set the sound to ALSA in Yast but that didn't help out. I am still unable to use muiltple applications that use sound. not sure where to go from here, except back to windows I have also tried to set the applications that i use to ALSA to no avail. The main apps that i use are Cedega, Skype, Teamspeak, and Amarok. Thank you once agian for your time on this matter.
You need to get a sound server to handle mutliple sounds.
This is simply a daemon that runs in the backround and mixes sounds.
I hear aRts is quite good.
Have a look at their site: http://www.arts-project.org/
And have a google for "Linux Sound Servers".
Thanks for the reply back, but look like this is not going to work out for me. I'm getting all these dependencies errors, and i'm not sure what to next. I just get very frustrated with linux when you have to do things like this, just to run multiple apps with sound.
When I use Teamspeak I don't know why but I suddenly have a problem with chatting with more than one person. I get a feedback of my own voice and it creates a loop sound that continues to build up (i don't know what happens after, i leave soon after the stupid noises start). And I also have issues with running multiple sounds at the same time, i.e. XMMS, TeamSpeak and a game. I'm running FC5 and using nVidia default audio drivers.
Any help will be great.
