I've just recently installed Mandrake 10.0 on my computer and also learned how to use the rpmi commnad properly (automatically searches for programs and dependacies for those who don't know).
Here's a little history on what I've been doing with mplayer, I think it might be important....I decided to install mplayer from the mandrake package that came on the cd rather then compiling it from source like I usually do. After doing so I found that I was unable to play DVD's. I then installed mplayer from source . The program still wouldn't play my DVD's, it gave me an error but I don't remember what it was.
I used the Mandrake package manager to then remove the mandrake pachage which made mplayer completely unusable but it stayed on my system. After compiling the program from source again my DVD's all worked
Now, here's the problem I'm having now. Certain videos (haven't determined what they have in common yet) have sort of a bubbling effect like people are talking underwater. They work fine when I use the totem video player but I don't like it. MP3's through mplayer work fine.
Recompiling and reinstalling didn't fix the problem, and I don't know how to uninstall a program that was compiled from source. I would appreciate any suggestions, but even if you just know how to uninstall mplayer so I can install it again that would be great
I guess your problem is typical.....I'll give u an example of this....I have a TV tuner card on my system, to activate this tv tuner, I use the command
modprobe bttv card=x radio=1 pll=2
Now, the funny/weird aspect of linux is that once it took from me a value of bttv card=13, next time I reformatted, it didnt work...this time bttv card=75 worked! and the third time, bttv card=63!......isnt it surprising? becos nothing really changed...I had the same set of 3 Red Hat cd's.....
so, in your case too, everything may be working normally, but still mplayer has a problem playing DVD's....u may try reformatting your linux partitions and installing mplayer fresh from source ..lol
Now, the answer to what you asked...
To uninstall a program that you installed from source, change your current directory where your source is located and then in that directory run the command
make uninstall
Then after the program finishes execution, move up one level and delete this folder...
Thanks Coolamit. I was able to get the program uninstalled and reinstalled and found that didn't make a difference. Here's what else I found out though....
Mplayer has released a new package (something in the last few months at least). There's also a package for it on the mandrake 10.0 cd's. The old version of mplayer works both my videos and my DVD just fine. The results of the new depend on how I install it... Installing it from the mandrake cd make everything work fine except when playing DVD's. Installing it from source makes the sound on certian mpegs and avi's not work properly.
I have a feeling that the mandrake package not working with my DVD ROM has to do with the rom it's self. Even in windows I found I needed extra software even beyond a DVD decoder to get it to work properly. Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that I'm cool now and problem is pretty much solved. I'm just going to use the mandrake package and reaquate myself iwth the "DVD player" which I so humbly ignore.
