Sound problems

When I installed RH9, there was a problem with the CD-ROM and libaio-something-or-other wasn't installed. There's no sound now, and when I shut the computer down (*not* when I'm booting) I get a [FAILED] for shutting down sound-service-0-0 or something and then something about aumix (is that information kept in a log file somewhere that I can look at?).

I installed libaio from the source rpm CD without a problem, but it didn't solve anything.

Any advice?

Thanks,
Phil

Well,
I have to tell you that I had the most frustrating time trying to configure my RH9 to play anything! I tried ALSA, OPENAL, .... blah, blah. Taken from a manual for installing OPENAL, "...just compile it and install it." Well that clears it up!! Funny that "experienced" Linux users always revert you back to reading the "manual", but what do you do when the manual was written by a two year old with absolutely no comprehension, or logic skills? What I finally did was to buy the 4Front driver for 20 bucks. It installed no problem, and you actually get a response back when you have a support question. So many Linux users harp about free software. Well, I hate to spoil the party but 9 times out of 10, free software is crap. I BOUGHT my Linux distribution, and even PAY to have my system automatically updated. I will eventually find the desire to figure out how to install the sound drivers on my own, but after searching google for help on this, I realize now that I will be on my own.

Actually, I had that problem too on my last installation because I was using the Soundblaster Live 5.1 sound card. I think the problem there is that no one's written a driver for it except the people at 4front, and they want money for it. That's life. But my problem now has to do with a trouble during the installation...

Ok, fixed itself somehow. Another mystery.
