Sound problem with a specific format

I just installed Red Hat 9, it recognizes my sound card, but it refuses to play MP3 files! Trying to play individual files on XMMS doesn´t do anything. Loading an entire playlist and hitting ¨play¨ only makes XMMS scrolls through the list real fast without playing anything.

And yes the system volume and the XMMS volume is all the way up.

Any ideas?

RH8, through the wisdem of Red Hat didn't ship with MP3 support. You can use that link above or I believe the XMMS homepage has the files and a tutorial.

Good luck.

Is it just me or is that as smart as a box of hair?

Red Hat is starting to piss me off. I found the non-broken XMMS rpm. Now when I try to remove the old XMMS, I get the following:

Package Not Found

The following package could not be found on your system. Installation cannot continue until it is installed.

libxmms.so.1 Required by kdeaddons

So it seems the lame package manager Red Hat ships on version 9 will not allow me to remove XMMS, and while it is there I can´t add the libxmms.so.1 library, as it is suposed to be on the XMMS rpm.

Anybody knows of a better RPM manager I can use?
